Santiago de Cuba is the first capital of the island since its establishment in 1515. It was displaced in 1556 by San Cristóbal de La Habana.

The ‘city of heroes’ for the important role it played in Independence and Revolutionary struggles. Santiago rivals Havana in literature, music and politics, and is rich in traditions.
